Needed: 10 more people to meet our goal!
Forty for our Fourth Anniversary!
Proyecto Faro (The Lighthouse Project) is celebrating its fourth anniversary. Just after the 2017 inauguration, Charo Ureña called her friend Rick Ufford-Chase to say every immigrant she knew – whether or not they had legal documents – was scared to death about the personal risk they felt with a Trump Presidency. Together, they committed to create an immigrant-led advocacy organization to support immigrant families in our community. Four years later…
- Proyecto Faro has grown stronger, built capacity for mutual aid, and supported immigrants throughout! We’ve provided temporary shelter for 10 homeless undocumented people when the county failed to protect them.
- We offer free monthly legal clinics to provide an alternative to the unpredictable and often predatory reality of for-profit immigration attorneys who charge exorbitant fees for work that often does nothing to further their legal status.
- PF provides significant support to school and community social workers as they respond to the needs of immigrant children and their families. We’re also leading an education justice campaign for the students of East Ramapo.
- Since the onset of the pandemic, we’ve built a mutual aid food distribution program and mobilized dozens of immigrant volunteers to feed their food insecure neighbors. We also initiated a community fridge project.
Proyecto Faro’s community organizing and relationship-building work enable us to respond quickly and effectively to new and pressing challenges that arise for Rockland’s immigrants. To remain responsive and have even greater impact, we are strengthening PF for the long haul. Proyecto Faro incorporated in the State of New York, formed a Board of Directors whose majority are immigrants, and received our 501(c)3 tax status.
We’ve hired Charo as our full-time Executive Director, Kate Morelos, a part-time Outreach Coordinator, and are about to hire a full-time Organizing Coordinator. Immigrants’ needs in Rockland are great; it’s vital we build our capacity to support and sustain a full-time Organizing Coordinator. In honor of our anniversary, an anonymous donor has stepped in to offer a very generous matching gift if we can expand our individual support. Therefore, we launched our “40 for 4 Years Anniversary Campaign”.
This donor will contribute $15,000 once we get 40 new monthly sustainers and/or existing donors who increase their total 2021 contributions to at least $500. We are now three quarters of our way to our goal. We truly need you to make a recurring or increased gift and strengthen our circle of supporters who will ensure the continuation and growth of this critically important work.
When each person of conscience adds their light to Proyecto Faro’s beacon, we can make a safe and welcoming harbor for Rockland’s immigrants. Will you help us unlock this $15,000 gift by becoming one of our 40 for 4? Please make your first monthly gift or an increased contribution today!
