Forty for 4 Years Anniversary Campaign

Needed: Forty for our Fourth Anniversary!
Proyecto Faro (The Lighthouse Project) is celebrating its fourth anniversary. Just after the 2017 inauguration, Charo Ureña called her friend Rick Ufford-Chase to say every immigrant she knew – whether or not they had legal documents – was scared to death about the personal risk they felt with a Trump Presidency. Together, they committed to create an immigrant-led advocacy organization to support immigrant families in our community. Four years later…

  • Proyecto Faro has grown stronger, built capacity for mutual aid, and supported immigrants throughout!
  • We offer free monthly legal clinics to provide an alternative to the unpredictable and often predatory reality of for-profit immigration attorneys who charge exorbitant fees for work that often does nothing to further their legal status.
  • PF provides significant support to school and community social workers as they respond to the needs of immigrant children and their families.
  • We took the lead in securing food donations and mobilizing dozens of immigrant volunteers to feed the many people in their communities suddenly dealing with food insecurity resulting from the pandemic and economic downturn. Proyecto Faro has been feeding hundreds of immigrants, many undocumented and ineligible for benefits, every month since March.

The community organizing work and relationship-building Proyecto Faro has been doing enable us to respond quickly and effectively to new and pressing challenges that arise for Rockland’s immigrants. To remain responsive and have even greater impact, we are strengthening PF for the long haul. After being fiscally sponsored by New Hempstead Presbyterian Church for nearly four years, Proyecto Faro incorporated in the State of New York, formed a Board of Directors whose majority are immigrants, and awaits the determination of its 501(c)3 tax status.

Last year we were able to hire Charo as our half-time Executive Director, as well as two part-time young women, both DREAMers, to coordinate our clinic, outreach, and social media work. Immigrants’ needs in Rockland are great; it’s vital we build our capacity to support and sustain a full-time director. In honor of our anniversary, an anonymous donor has stepped in to offer a very generous matching gift if we can expand our individual support. Therefore, we are launching a “40 for 4 Years Anniversary Campaign”.

This donor will contribute $7,500 once we get 20 new monthly sustainers and/or existing donors who increase their total 2021 contributions to at least $500. Then, if we can get an additional 20 supporters to give monthly or total $500 for the year, this donor will make a second gift of $7,500! We truly need you to make a recurring or increased gift and strengthen our circle of supporterswho will ensure the continuation and growth of this critically important work.

When each person of conscience adds their light to Proyecto Faro’s beacon, we can make a safe and welcoming harbor for Rockland’s immigrants. Will you help us unlock this $15,000 gift by becoming one of our 40 for 4? Please make your first monthly gift or an increased contribution today. Help us plan for a productive and empowering 2021!

Sincerely,
Charo Ureña, Executive Director
