Part-time Bilingual (Spanish) Organizing Trainer Consultant
Work to take place in August & September 2024
Proyecto Faro/Project Lighthouse is an immigrant-led, grassroots organization located in Rockland County, NY. Our mission is to build a community in Rockland in which all people can feel safe, thrive, and actively contribute to their families and communities regardless of their immigration status. We work toward systemic change through leadership development, community organizing, trust-building and cultivating community power.
Over the past four years, Proyecto Faro has been actively involved in a coalition of organizations fighting for educational justice for the public-school children of the East Ramapo Central School District (ERCSD). ERCSD public schools are 96% students of color, many of whom are newly arrived immigrants, and has the largest concentration of English-language learners in any school district in New York State. For nearly 15 years, the majority-white ERCSD school board, representing the local private-school community, has systematically defunded this high-needs public-school system, resulting in overcrowded, dangerous school conditions that lack the most basic educational resources and adequate staffing. Our coalition is organizing to hold the ERCSD school board accountable for failing to provide a quality education for its public-school students guaranteed under State law.
Since 2022, Proyecto Faro has been building the organizing capacity and leadership skills of a group of immigrant public-school parents called Organización de Padres Empoderados / Empowered Parents (OPE). OPE has become active contributors to the campaign for educational justice for ERCSD public-school students.
